Tubing is used for the production string in which the oil or gas is transported from the reservoir to the surface. Tubing pipes generally have a smaller diameter than casing, with the exception of an outer diameter of 4.5". This can be both tubing and casing.
Casing is used to line the borehole. On the one hand, they protect the soil and groundwater layers from contamination, for example by drilling fluids. On the other hand, they stabilise the borehole. Drilling with drill pipes and lining with casing are carried out in regular alternation. From the surface to the reservoir, the casings become telescopically smaller.
